Name in Lights....or at least print!

by Kathryn Primm DVM on 05/30/13

Well, I am finally on the home stretch for my book of pet memoirs. All my clients on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ are anxiously waiting. I will receive the printed proof copy (hopefully the last one) and if all is well with the margins and formatting (and ok'd by the editor), we can publish next week.  They say that the title will be available on Kindle within 24 hours of editor authorization and available on www.amazon.com shortly there after.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to an animal charity, but we have not worked out which of the many deserving ones we will choose. If you have ideas, please comment.

Spring Cleaning....and renovation!

by Kathryn Primm DVM on 05/07/13

We are pleased to announce that our kennel building has undergone a complete remodel! We offer boarding only to our registered clients, so it is a service that is special for you.  We have all new galvanized run walls that have sound dampening panels.  They are attractive and easy to clean.  The room is newly painted and now there are 12 runs.
We still give the same attentive care as always, but now in a newer fresher environment.  And don't forget...all our boarders get a free bath so make sure you schedule your pick up time within normal office hours to take advantage of this special touch. We book up for holidays so call now!

Refer friends and win a Kindle!

by Kathryn Primm DVM on 04/23/13

At Applebrook, we have learned that a friend of a friend is someone we would like to know. If a friend of yours has pets you can earn valuable rewards simply by referring them to us.

Give your friends one of our referral certificates (on Facebook, Google+ and we can email or you can pick some up) and ask them to present it to us and we will give them 10% off their first visit. Once the certificate is redeemed we will donate $10 to Pet Placement Center, a local no-kill rescue shelter. We will also enter your name into our contest to win a FREE Kindle reader*.  It's that simple. Refer them before somebody else does. We pledge to take wonderful care of them and their fur-friends!

*The client with the most new client referrals who present referral certificates (from March 2013-Aug 2013) will win a Kindle reader valued at $199.00.

3 Products that have changed my life

by Kathryn Primm DVM on 03/28/13

Part of what we do at Applebrook is select pet related products to make life with pets easier and more fun. Whether trying to prevent disease or treat it, we have to work around the fact that pets do not always cooperate with what we want.

1. Pill Pockets- This product changed my life first when I had a cat suffering from heart failure. His name was Coyote and he was so sweet.  He was affected by this disease far too early in his life and I knew that it was a progressive and terminal process.  To slow the process, he needed several oral medications.  I told myself that I would not ruin what remained of his life by shoving pills down his throat several times a day. This is how I discovered Pill Pockets.  Coyote loved them and met me at the cabinet every dose! He thought he was luckier than the other cats. If your pet will eat these, they will make everyone's life better.

2. Oral parasite control- For years, I have used the topical products and they are safe and effective, but I dearly love being able to give parasite control as a treat.  I like to be able to mark things off my To Do list and when I give one pill that covers things, I can mark off several at once! I give my dog, Dora, a Trifexis pill every month all year long and I never have to worry about fleas, heartworms or intestinal parasites.

3. Invisible Fence- I love being able to let my dog have what appears to be free run of my yard, but still keep her (and my flowers) safe. It is easy to keep maintained and if there is a problem, I can call and get very prompt service.  I tried the self installed versions and there is no comparison to the name brand.  I do not have to worry about her digging out or hurting herself on metal fencing.

My life runs at a very hectic pace. I love things that make it easier to do what the right thing by my pets.  If you have questions, do not hesitate to comment here and I will do my best to answer.  I do not recommend products that I have not personally tried, so I am happy to share my experience with you.

Happy Easter!

Revenge is mine?

by Kathryn Primm DVM on 03/12/13

I very often hear people say that their dog or cat is retaliating by urinating in the house or on a personal item. They say that "he ran and hid when he saw me because he knew what he did was wrong".  But having treated and studied animals for most of my life, I would suggest that your dog or cat is survivalistically dependent on his or her ability to read subtle body language cues. When you come in the door and see the urine spot, you tense up, you sound angry and you move subtlety different than usual.  So the pet runs and hides.  Animals lack the higher brain functions necessary to link a behavior that happened hours before to the present.  If your pet was previously litter or house trained and now is not, I would strongly suggest seeing a veterinarian for some diagnostic testing.  There are many medical reasons for inappropriate elimination and your veterinarian is trained to help you get to the bottom of this frustrating issue.  If your pet has a medical reason for this behavior, don't you want to help?  Of course you do. Please do not be too quick to diagnose your pet with a behavior problem.  Let your vet make the diagnosis and use his/her expertise.  Whatever the cause, your vet is there with you to be a healthcare team for your pet.
